The Institute for Challenging Disorganization's Clutter Hoarding Scale rates homes from Level 1 (typical clutter) to Level 5 (severe structural, biohazard, and safety hazards). We use it to build a realistic scope, timeline, and price — and to decide which PPE and disposal protocols apply.

How do you handle the resident's feelings?
Slowly, patiently, and never with judgment. Our crews are Mental-Health-First-Aid trained and the American Psychological Association's guidance on hoarding disorder informs every conversation. We work at the resident's pace, celebrate small wins, and take breaks when needed.

What if we find money, jewelry, or documents?
Everything of apparent value stops the sort. We photograph, log, and set aside for the resident or executor to review before anything else moves. Cash, deeds, birth certificates, and family photos are handled with special care.

Can we schedule without the resident's knowledge?
Only with a court order or documented Adult Protective Services / municipal enforcement action. Voluntary cleanouts require the resident's consent — it's both the law in most states and the ethical path to lasting change.

Live animals are our first priority. We stop work if we find pets in distress, coordinate with a local humane society partner, and never haul out an animal without proper rehoming. Rodents and insect infestations are documented and treated under our biohazard protocols.

Level 3+ situations often trigger dwelling coverage, especially when there are biohazards, rodent damage, or water intrusion. We help you file — but hoarding claims can be denied if 'gradual deterioration' language applies. We'll be honest up front about what's likely covered.
